Transition Update 12/13/18

Even though the Christmas season is very busy, the Transition Team and I (Pastor Harold) wanted to end the year with an update on the transition process. At this early stage, we are very pleased with the mutual blessing that church and pastor have been to each other. We pray that God will continue to bless this partnership!

Back in March and September of this year, River Rock’s leaders led the congregation in gatherings and groups that resulted in two clear messages: River Rock Church needs a clearer picture of what God wants it to be and the church was hopeful for a season of building community. At the same time, the elders were clarifying a list of priorities for the transition process. We listened.

First, we’re making an intentional effort to have events – like the recent potluck lunch – to help us simply get to know each other better. These will continue. Second, building community is the reason that, despite some clear challenges, we’ve continued to hold one morning service, for now. The positive result of having the whole church together has been important. Thank you for being part of a single loving church family!

As the transitional pastor, November and December have been the months of my learning about the congregation, becoming comfortable with the day-to-day schedule, and helping the church celebrate the Advent and Christmas season in a meaningful way. I thank you for helping Mary and me feel very much at home at River Rock.

Now to what’s next. By clicking here, you can read through a tentative timeline for the work that lies ahead. The Board of Elders and the Transition Team have one key priority: to include the entire congregation in the process of discerning God’s will. I firmly believe discernment is done best by the whole group, not a few. It is our hope that we can provide opportunities for your participation without burdening your already busy schedules.

Task one will start in January. It will answer the “Who are we?” question. This work will include a brief history of River Rock, but also asking what the church means to you and how you may have gotten connected to the church. When completed, this work will become the first section of our church profile, which will become part of calling a new senior pastor.

Task two will begin when task one is completed – likely in February. The second question to answer is: “What does God want us to be?” Yes, it’s the “V” word: vision! This is the most crucial task we have to (re)discover. Before we work on this, we will provide some tools to help all of us become more ready to talk about this core question.

Look for more information after the New Year. Thank you for your love and commitment to River Rock Church! If you have any questions, feel free to ask Pastor Harold or any member of the Transition Team.
